Baltic Sauna Traditions Take Center Stage at Expo 2025 Osaka

From April 25 to May 6, a special Tourism Week “Co-Creating Cultures for the Future“ is taking place.  In regard to the Tourism Week,  On April 26th was organized Lithuania’s first EXPO thematic weeks event and a joint event with Latvia “Co-creating tourism experiences that bring cultures together”, highlighting the Baltic region’s holistic approach to wellness – especially the Baltic sauna and its deep-rooted connection to nature.  

The event commenced with opening remarks from Aurelijus Zykas, Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to Japan, and Andžejs Kaševskis, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia to Japan. They emphasized the significance of cultural exchange and the shared heritage between the Baltic nations and Japan.

The event featured a professional sauna master with over eight years of experience – Birutė Masiliauskienė, head of the Lithuanian Sauna Association – alongside a Latvian sauna expert Ieva Kolosova, Ugis Nastevics and Katsuki Tanaka, official sauna ambassador of the Japan Sauna and Spa Association, who introduced his book Comic Satabi (Sauna Trip). Through engaging illustrations, Tanaka shared his experiences exploring saunas around the world, including those in Lithuania and Latvia, fostering a deeper appreciation for global sauna cultures.

During the 2.5-hour event, attendees experienced authentic presentations of Baltic sauna rituals and took part in discussions about cultural differences and shared traditions, explored the historical and cultural significance of sauna practices, their role in promoting well-being, and the unique rituals associated with each tradition. The Baltic Pavilion also featured interactive workshops and demonstrations, allowing visitors to engage directly with Baltic wellness traditions. 

These events underscored the Baltic nations’ commitment to preserving and sharing their cultural heritage, aligning with Expo 2025’s theme of “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” By highlighting the importance of balance, resilience, and harmony with nature, Lithuania and Latvia offered valuable perspectives on holistic well-being and sustainable tourism.

The Baltic Pavilion, a collaborative effort between Lithuania and Latvia, presents the theme “We Are One,” emphasizing unity, cultural heritage, and innovation. Through immersive experiences and interactive exhibits, the pavilion invites visitors to explore the Baltic region’s unique contributions to global discussions on sustainability, wellness, and cultural preservation.
